The Catesby Tunnel was the longest tunnel on the SHeffield to London section of the Great Central Mainline. It was constructed through the grounds of the Catesby Estate after the landowners refued planning permission for the route, unless the railway was put into a tunnel. There are 8 airshafts. The tunnel dips to the north, and the northern part is flooded. Due to its length, it is popular with tunnel enthusiasts. It is constructed in the same architectural style as the other Great Cnetral Railway tunnels, with a hoop profile that narrows to the base and lines in Staffordshire Blue Brick. The tunnel was lined in over 30million of them. It is accessible at its southern end. Open drainage pits are a slight hazard, requiring card when in the tunnel.
