These three tunnels were all located on the Great Wastern Railway / Midland Railway Joint lines through the Forest of Dean. The Purton tunnel was on the Severn Viaduct line from Sharpness to Lydney, built to take double track, but only laid with a single track. Moseley Green Tunnel and Mireystock Tunnel were located on the northern part of the network on the connecting routes to Ross on Wye. These routes only ever carried light passenger traffic, and much of their use was to transprt coal from the many mines in the area.
Moseley Green tunnel is accessible at its southern end only, the northern portal being within the grounds of a restaurant. Near the centre of the tunnel, it is braced with a neteork of sleepers and girders. These were installed in the mid 1970's as as this point the tunnel passes under a road. It is rumoured that the tunnel was braced to reduce the liklihood of collapse when a superheavy load was taken along that road.
Mireystock tunnel is backfilled at its northern end. Over the last couple of years, there have been some efforts by local volunteers to get the tunnel opened up. Many of the abandoned trackbeds in the area are now used as recreational routes, and the reopening of the tunnel would allow safe pedestrian passage beneath a busy road. It is 221m long.
