Sometimes known as the Tonmawr Tunnel, the Gylfichi Tunnel is one of few in the UK that collapsed during use. Fortunatly no-one was harmed. The collapse was likely due to water damage combined with coal-mining related subsidence. The tunnel was single track and dipped to the north. The northern end collapsed in 1947 and no attempt was made to repair the tunnel. It is now flooded to about half its length. The photos below are kindly donated by Morlock of Darkplaces.![]() |
