The R&SBR runs parallel to the GWR Abergwynfi branch in the narrow Afan valley. The GWR branch arrived first and took the easier route, leaving the R&SBR having to negotiate less level ground. The R&SBR is most famous for its 3443 yard long Rhondda tunnel which has been partly backfilled. The Gelli Tunnel though is easily accessible.
