. Torpantau tunnel was the highest tunnel on the British standard guage rail network, its southern portal at an altitude of 1313 ft. The tunnel is curved, 666yards long and built for single track. Flooding to a depth of about 1 ft in both approach cuttings renders the use of boots essential. This tunnel is a fiarly popular one to explore, judging by the number of footprints inside. It is used by a local outward bound centre for expeditions. Scattered broken masonry is all that is left of Torpanatau station, 200 yards from the south portal. The tunnel itself is partially unlined, only the roof arch is lined, in stone blocks rather than the usual brick. There are a few short sections with brick reinforcement. The photogallery was taken in a single trip, running from south to north.
